Abstract
[INTRODUCTION] The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of measured resting metabolic rate, to compare and analyze the predicted RMR and the measured RMR and to provide useful data for the evaluation of RMR.
[METHOD] The significance for the differences between male and female and the differences between the measured results and predicted results of RMR were tested by paired t-test. Correlation of measured data was obtained by Pearson correlation coefficient.

[RESULT] Oxygen uptake(V¢« O2), V¢« O2 per weight(WT), carbon dioxide production(V¢« CO2), RMR, and RMR per WT were significantly higher in male(p< .05) and there was no statistically significant difference in respiratory quotient(RQ). There was a significant positive correlation between V¢« O2, V¢« O2 per WT, V¢« CO2 and RMR(p< .01), but there was a lower positive correlation between V¢« O2 per WT and RMR than V¢« O2 and V¢« CO2.. However, there was a significant negative correlation between RQ and RMR(p< .05). There was a significant positive correlation between measured RMR and predicted RMR(p< .01), but there was a significantly lower correlation in predicted RMR than measured RMR(p< .05).
[CONCLUSION] V¢« O2 per WT and RQ should be considered in the evaluation of measured RMR through indirect methods and the widely used four formulas of predicted RMR have limits to measure Korean RMR.
